Cat and the Trolls Film by Michael Amundsen
SYNOPSIS “Cat and the Trolls”
Two bereft children are left by their just-widowed father, gone to borrow a wagon. His three hour trip extends into the night when a raging blizzard descends upon the tiny homesteader’s shack occupied by the now thoroughly-frightened children. In the middle of the night, a young rodeo cowboy bursts into the cabin, collapsing on the bed in a struggle for life. The next evening an enraged father arrives, seeking vengeance on the cowboy.

The strong-willed sister (Siri) convinces him to reconsider his intended vengeance. The angry father gradually transforms, ultimately amputating the bronc rider’s badly frozen leg. Concerned about the lad’s need for professional medical help, he decides to take the boy to town. Tying the injured cowboy to a makeshift sled, the concerned father offers to take the children with them. Siri refuses because of her father’s wishes and the brother agrees. The two men disappear into the storm. Siri worries if she has made the right decision.

With food and fuel waning, the children begin celebrating Christmas. Wind from the blizzard shakes the stovepipe loose. They struggle to restore it, accidentally spilling a pot of water on the fire. They desperately try to restart the fire. Failing, they fall asleep, keeping warm in each other’s arms. The cat cuddles close to them.

In the morning, the children are awakened by the Staalessens and an old Mule Skinner with their father. After falling and breaking his leg, the Staalessens found him by the dog’s frantic barking. Because of the storms, this was their first chance to make it to the shack. An endearing and surprising ending brings everyone’s love, faith and endurance full circle with the secret help of the pussycat, bear and the trolls.

“Cat and the Trolls” is a moving, intense, inspirational coming of age Christmas story of faith and redemption. It is a story that I believe needs to be told before it is lost to history.
